ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN FOOD PRODUCTION

The growing population and improving technology have involved artificial intelligence in our lives rapidly. AI has the ability of endless improvement and firms benefit from increased productivity, reduced costs and lower environmental impact. AI technology can be implemented in most of the food and beverage industry areas in which repetitive tasks are common operations. 

Food processing involves categorizing the food and raw materials from the farm, implementing the machinery and various equipment, and maybe more steps. AI and robots are favorable in food production applications like picking, placing, packaging and palletizing. The system uses cameras, NIR spectroscopy, x-rays and lasers to analyze and sort foods on the go quickly.



Here are the five AI benefits to food production;

1- Improved Sorting

AI is capable of distinguishing foods for their most effective use. For example, potatoes are grouped as best for french fries and potato chips, and the system is based on reducing waste. TOMRA, the machinery system brand, says this solution regains 5-10 percent of production by reducing the amount of wasted potato. 

2- Improved Food Safety Compliance 

Safety is a significant issue in food processing. Cameras in the food facilities and units track whether workers obligate the safety rules such as masks and hair productions. So that violations can be seen and corrected in real-time.

3- Maintaining Cleanliness

Automated processing may not necessarily mean a clean enough system. Conventional cleaning systems did not have sensors and equipment that could see small residues. However, Nottingham University and Martec of Whitwell company are developing a cleaning system. The system uses ultrasonic sensing and optical fluorescence imaging technologies to give information to AI about microbial residuals. Moreover, according to the university, this system saves money, time and water supply. 

4- Helps to Decide What New Products to Make 

AI helps product development and create new combinations. Well, how? Some companies use systems that divide consumers into different groups and demographics according to their preferences and tastes. Namely, AI provides a forecasting system that detects which product is more likely to sell. This is quite useful for companies that offer so many products to the market. 

Also, in the beverage industry, AI technology is seen. Manually done processes such as cleaning, washing, filling and arranging now automatically operated on a conveyor belt.

In sum, the replacement of manual labor by automation created a significant reduction in the labor cost, enormous speed up, and currently increasing productivity. Although it's at the beginning of the way, artificial intelligence is reshaping the entire food production sector, especially the five areas listed above.
